Spring is always an exciting time for me because the airshow and aviation event season kicks into full gear, and as the weather warms up seaplane activity quickly ramps up. This year's spring activity has inspired more than than any since the economic downturn in 2008. Attendance at Sun 'n Fun showed a dramatic increase due to several factors - absolutely gorgeous weather, and the return of the rumble and thrill of military jets surely helped draw the big crowds. Sales at the SPA booth showed a 30-percent increase, and new-member and renewal activity was strong. The vendors and aircraft manufactures I spoke with all remarked about strone sales numbers. In addition to Sun n Fun, SPA attended the Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida; the Northwest Aviation Conference in Puyallup, Washington; the Washington Seaplane Pilots Association's annual Grounded Hogs dinner at Seattle's Museum of Flight; the Planes, Trains & BBQ and 100th Anniversary in Seaplanes events in Tavares, Florida; the Recreational Aviation Foundation's Red Rock Round Up in Utah; and the Lake Amphibian Flyers Club Lake-a-Thon in Lakeland, Florida just to mention a few. The thing that really has me smiling is the passion and high spirits of the pilots and attendees at these events. People seem to be more excited about flying than they have been in many years.
