I recently called Gerry Celichowski, the owner of the property where we host our annual Corn Roast at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. During the conversation he described the new 10-foot-tall fence topped with barbed wire that is being installed around Whitman Field to comply with federal security regulations. Then I visited EAA's website, which featured an article headlined "Airport/AirVenture Grounds Benefit from Fence/Road Project." This caused me to reflect on my childhood spent riding my bicycle around Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and Pompano Air Park on weekends, sticking my head into hangars, striking up discussions with pilots, and learning and feeding my endless appetite for knowledge of anything related to flying.
