As President of the International Water Resources Association, it is my great honour to introduce this special issue in honor of our association's 40th anniversary. We know that water is central to all development goals. Almost all countries and all peoples in the world face big challenges of water security and more generally, global environment sustainability, due to increasing variability of water over time and space, resulting in more floods and droughts, and to water pollution. Water is a medium for negative feedback between human activity and climate. IWRA is a well-established international water resources organization founded in November 1971 in the United States, with the famous Chinese-American Professor Ven Te Chow as its first President and driving force.
