Citing the downturn in the global economy, Shell Oil Company announced February 23, 2010 that it was ending its attempt to garner water rights in northwest Colorado for a shale oil extraction project.rnThe intermountain states of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado are estimated to contain approximately 800 billion barrels of oil embedded in shale. The extraction process, however, takes a considerable amount of water. The need for water in an often-dry region was one of several issues that concerned environmental groups.
