In 1790, the year that the hero of our story was born, New York had the same population as my hometown, the cathedral 'city'/Middle England megalopolis of Lichfield, Staffs. Safe to say it was not yet the greatest city in the world. It wasn't even the greatest city in America (Philadelphia, Boston and even Charleston were all busier ports). Frank Sinatra hadn't sung about it, nor had Woody Allen set a single film there, and the Statue of Liberty hadn't even been conceived. With the War of Independence still fresh in people's minds (New York had been more loyalist than any other city) its reputational standing in the new republic wasn't exactly high either.
