摘要

The illumination performance of surgical luminaires isnquantified by performance indicators defined in an internationalnstandard (IEC 2000). The remaining maximum illuminance in relevantnsituations, the light-field size, and the spectral characteristics arenperformance indicators used by hospitals as input for luminaire optingnprocesses. Industry however focuses on illuminance whenncommunicating with health care professionals. The aim of this study isnto evaluate whether these standards are sufficient to describenluminaire performance, especially for modern LED lighting technology.nIlluminance distribution and spectrum measurements were performednon 5 different state-of-the-art (LED) surgical luminaires. The resultsnshowed that changing situations not only changed the maximumnilluminance but also changed the light-field sizes and shapes,nintroducing substantial differences between luminaires. Moreover,ncolored cast shadows and light color variations across the light-fieldnwere observed for 3 luminaires using differently colored light emittingndiodes (LEDs). Both the changing light-field sizes and shapes, and thencast shadows and light color variations for LED luminaires are notncovered by the current standard. The standard should therefore benextended to incorporate these aspects, especially for such a high-endnapplication as surgical lighting.
