The PSC sector is unknown territory for a surprising proportion of those involved in thinking about or addressing security issues. In this section the intention is to offer a basic context for the rest of the paper, dispelling some misconceptions along the way. First, I shall try to provide a clear, straightforward typology for understanding my argument, if not the sector as a whole. I shall then move on to describe the development of the British PSC sector up to the invasion of Iraq, highlighting its differences from its US counterpart, above all its much more uneasy relationship with Government. Finally, I shall try to give some idea of how the Iraqi bubble in protective security arose, what it actually entails and whether it will last.
