Crayke Windsor has set himself quite a task: with his elegant double-ender Thyme he has invited comparison with the 20th century's master of double-ender design, K. Aage Nielsen. During the course of his half-century-plus career, Nielsen drew upon the historical types of his native Denmark to create a series of double-ended sailing yachts including some of our most graceful and instantly recognizable ones, from salty cruisers like the Bermuda Race-winning HOLGER DANSKE and the powerful NORTHERN CROWN (owned for years by my mentor, Joel White) to tidy daysail-ers even smaller than Thyme. The great unifying feature of this series was Nielsen's refinement of classic Norse lines, including his unique adaptation of the pointed stern into a shapely, buxom, yet still somehow fine canoe stern.
