Coach-whipping is essentially extreme braiding.Because I was covering an eight-sided handle,it seemed logical to use eight strands.In this case,a 'strand' consists of four individual pieces - a green one,two white ones,and another green one.I used Vs ' braided nylon line purchased from a marine supplier.Cotton will work,but it will get dirty faster. Cut eight strands (sets) of line,each one about twice as long as the finished wrap.Tape each strand to the handle,one on each flat.Angle them alternately,about 45 degrees to the handle's axis.Once you have them all taped in these alternating positions,wind them around the handle,going over and under as each strand passes the others.You'll soon get into the rhythm of the braid,and the procedure will go surprisingly quickly.Keep the wraps snug as you go,and put a rubber band around the finished part of your work,moving it along the handle as you progress,to keep the wrap from unraveling.
