US tobacco interests are excited about what they see as the huge potential for sales of their leaf in Indonesia. The flue-cured leaf grown in the south-east of the US might seem far removed from Indonesia's sweet-smelling clove cigarettes, but US growers are hoping that their product can find a bigger place in these kreteks. The Indonesian market is a very appealing one. With 210m people, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country, and according to the World Heatth Organization, 70% of the population smokes. About 3% of the cigarettes smoked are 'regular' cigarettes - either American-or Virginia-blend - but the rest are kreteks.
