As I drove slowly past McDonalds in Dubai, I spotted a fully-garbed Bedouin sitting in his flowing robes and happily munching a lamb-burger while watching a video on his state-of-the-art mobile phone. Just outside, a chauffeur waited in an air-conditioned four-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser, apparently indifferent to the 39℃ heat and the staggering number of building sites which were busy transforming the surrounding desert into the world's most exclusive, tax-free oasis.
