It is a real challenge for the modern cigarette marketeers to come up with a new brand image that the public is going to remember. How do you design an interesting cigarette packet in Western Europe and the US when those countries demand the obtrusive health warnings right across the packet? Brands in all industries have a life of their own and Alfred Dunhill, for instance, extended its masculine smokers brand image to related products such as aftershave and clothing. Attempts by the tobacco industry to publicise its logos by sponsoring sporting events have been very controversial.
