The carbon-based energy business has had a long run of driving the wheels of commerce and industry, and it has world quite well making possible the societal advances of the 20th century. But now, in the 21st century, the energy business has to move on. It is in the midst of reinvention, a process that will forever change the way energy resources are used, from oil to gas to renewables.If there is an end-point to this reinvention, it remains to be seen. But the direction is clear, driven by the economy, environmental concerns, and social attitudes. If it works as predicted, gas and renewables could account for about half of all energy utilization within our lifetime. For those in the pipe line and gas business, that means you have to get cracking.
