The public's concern over pipe line safety has accelerated over the past few years, reaching the point where tremendous amounts of time and effort are being spent to increase support and get action for safer pipe lines. Coalitions of concerned citizens are springing up throughout the nation with basically the same theme, increased safety of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipe lines. Two examples of coalitions that have come into existence as the result of major pipe line accidents are in Bellingham, Washington and Carlsbad, New Mexico. The efforts of these and other groups have put pressure on state legislators, Congress, federal and state regulators and the pipe line industry to take actions to improve the safety of the nation's 2.1 million miles of pipe line infrastructure. The coalitions are calling for tougher regulations, increased monitoring and stricter enforcement of current and future regulations.
