BRUSSELS-Denmark can impose a tax on farmers who grow genetically modified crops and use the funds to compensate farmers whose conventional or organic crops become contaminated by the genetically modified plants,the European Commission ruled Nov.23.The European Union executive body state aid regulator ruled that the compensation can be paid to conventional Danish farmers whose crops contain more than 0.9 percent of genetically modified material and is limited to the price difference between the market price of a crop that has to be labeled as containing genetically modified material and a crop for which no such labeling is required.The Danish scheme is the first of its kind in the European Union,where there is considerable opposition to genetically engineered crops.
