The reaction of Cd(ClO_4)_2·6H_2O with the tetradentate tripod amine BPQA (bis(2-methylpyridyl)-2-methylquinolyl- amine) afforded the mononuclear complex [Cd(BPQA)(N_3)_2] (1), whereas its reaction with the bidentate amines Et_2Meen (N,N-diethyl-N'-methylethylenediamine) and DMP (2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol- 1-ylmethyl)pyridine) resulted in the formation of different bridged-azido polymeric 2D- and 1D-chains [Cd_2(Et_2Meen)_2(l1,1-N_3)_2(l1,3-N_3)_2]n (2) and [Cd(DMP)(l1,1-N_3)_2]n (3), respectively. The reaction of Zn(ClO_4)_2·6H_2O with DMP led to the isolation of the doubly bridged EO-azido dinuclear complex [Zn(DMP)(l1,1-N_3)(N_3)]_2 (4). The four complexes have been structurally characterized by elemental microanalyses, IR spectroscopy and by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The luminescence properties of [Cd(BPQA)(N_3)] (1) complex and its ligand, BPQA were investigated, where the complex revealed strong fluorescence enhancement.
