The presence of three adjacent bulky groups in 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(diphenyl-thiophosphino) leads to structural distortion and hindered rotation about P-C bonds with concomitant inequivalence of P-1 and P-3 in the solution-state P-31 n.m.r. spectrum at low temperatures. The crystal structure shows that in the solid there are substantial deviations [up to 71pm] from planarity of the central C6P4 skeleton, although the aromaticity appears to be retained.
