The synthesis, acid-base behaviour and Cu2+ and Zn2+ co-ordination studies in aqueous solution of the new open-chain compounds, N-(3-aminopropyl)-N'-3-(2,2'-bithien-5-ylmethyl)aminopropylethane-1,2-diam ine (L1) and N-(2-aminoethyl)-N"-2(2,2'-bithien-5-ylmethyl)aminoethyl diethylen-1,4,7-triamine (U), resulting from the linkage of polyamine chains with a bithiophene unit have been explored by means of pH titrations and NMR techniques. The electrochemical behaviours of L1 and of the system Cu2+ -L1 have been studied by linear scan, cyclic, and differential pulse voltammetry in the pH range 3-11. The results denote that the electrochemical pattern of L1 differs from that previously described for macrocyclic polyazathiophenophane receptors, for which relatively stable Cu(I) intermediates were detected.
