Reaction of a simple Schiff-base ligand bis(hydroxylbenzyl)diaminoxylene (H-2-p-xysal) with copper(II) perchlorate results in the formation of Cu-2(p-xysal)(2) with a double-stranded helicate structure, constructed from two slightly different units of dinuclear Cu(II), in which all the copper(II) ions have distorted tetrahedral geometries. The two sublattices are interpenetrating where the helix axes are oriented as the monoclinic angle (116.6degrees). ESI-MS measurement indicates that the complex may partially dissociate in solution. The EPR spectrum in a frozen CHCl3/MeOH solution shows that two different species are present. The spectrum has been satisfactory simulated with one mononuclear species and one dinuclear species. Cyclic voltammetry study shows a weakly reversible reduction wave of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple at E-1/2 = -0.915 V. There are two successive oxidation waves at E-pa = 0.94 and 1.25 V. The latter one appears to be weakly reversible and it is assigned to the one electron oxidation of the phenolate group. The intra- and inter-molecular interactions are demonstrated to play important roles in the formation and the stabilization of the molecular architectures of the complex. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
