Past, present and future in the field of polymeric reagents

I was fortunate to have had great scientists and excellent teachers who introduced me to the life of science. I learned much from Dr S. Patai about the general field of organic synthesis during my MSc studies (1951). Professor F. Katzir-Katchalsky inspired me during my PhD studies (late 1950s) with his research on the immobilization of enzymes, so that I look upon my contributions to the field of polymeric reagents as an extension of this concept. The main novel subjects dealt with in this article were the following. Novel analytical methods in the analyses of functional groups bound to insoluble heterogeneous systems, such as polymeric reagents. This includes the use of non-aqueous titrations and the USR. Polymers as donors in various electrophilic reactions have been introduced, including methods for efficient peptide synthesis. The concept of infinite dilution or concentration was introduced, using polymer-bound reagents. This was used in cyclization reactions and in the isolation of short-lived reactive intermediates. In collaboration with Professor Woodward, we introduced the photosensitive blocking groups, which later became a general and useful tool in field of synthetic organic chemistry, in photorelease of biologicially active molecules and in combinatorial chemistry of multipeptide syntheses and has extended today to DNA chips.
