HUNDREDS of stalk samples will soon hang in a special room at G & K Concepts, Harlan, Ind. Eventually, each one will be sent to a lab. What consultants learn will guide them as they help their clients fine-tune their nitrogen programs. Greg Kneubuhlerbelieves in stalk sampling. The key is how much N is left in the stalk. Ideally, consultants pull samples just before black layer. They cut a section of stalk 8 inches above the ground. They often pull soil samples in predetermined locations based on Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (aerial) imagery.
