Social capital has become an influential concept in understanding many relevant social events and processes. This article offers a preliminary discussion of the characteristics of social capital in a group of rural communities in Saskatchewan and of its implications for the futures of (hese communities. Based on survey data, we analyze the presence of social capital among different community actors with regard to two dimensions; the prevalence of trust and participation in both formal and informal organizations.
