Synthesis and characterization of asymmetrically substituted head-to-tail aromatic Schiff-base polymers

In recent years conjugated polymers have been widely studied in regard to their electronic, optoelectronic, electrochemical and nonlinear optical properties. Of conjugated polymers poly (p-phenylene-vinylene) (PPV) is one of the most widely studied. Aromatic Schiff-base polymers, or polyazomethines (PAMs), are isoelectronic with PPV, but have not been as widely studied. Like PPVs, PAMs and are expected to have interesting electronic properties. Although the synthesis of polyazomethines was first reported in 1923, the development of these materials has been hindered by their intractability and insolubility in common organic solvents. In recent years two approaches have been used to overcome these problems. One approach to the insolubility/intractability issue has been the addition of long side chains onto the polymer backbone. In 1989 Lee and coworkers reported the synthesis of alkoxy- substituted PAMs that were soluble in organic solvents. Park and coworkers similarly reported that adding an (n-alkoxy-) methyl chain to PAM backbones increased solubility. The second approach was developed by Jenekhe and coworkers who utilized Lewis acids such as AlCl_3 and GaCl_3 to form soluble polymer complexes. Accordingly they were able to characterize a series of PAMs using cyclic voltammetry, FT-IR, UV and steady-state fluorescence. ~1H NMR spectra were also obtained although the peaks were somewhat broadened by the GaCl_3.
