摘要

Drug efficacy should be evaluated using clinical outcome measures (morbidity and mortality) that are meaningful to the patient. However, some chronic diseases, including hepatitis C, develop slowly.Surrogate endpoint initially. Large numbers of patients must be followed for several years in order to measure clinical endpoints. This represents a major obstacle to drug evaluation in chronic diseases.It is therefore acceptable, in the short term, to use laboratory endpoints, but only if there is a strong correlation between the surrogate endpoint and long-term clinical outcome.
