Renal impairment, drug interactions, co-administration with an antidiarrhoeai, etc. Colchicine is a cytotoxic drug used for symptomatic treatment of gout attacks. Colchicine acts by suppressing inflammation (1). Diarrhoea is an early warning sign of colchicine overdose, preceding the onset of more severe adverse effects such as haematological disorders (potentially life-threatening agranulocy-tosis, thrombocytopenia and anaemia). Colchicine can also cause neuromyopa-thy and azoospermia. These adverse effects are dose-dependent (1). Colchicine also has a narrow therapeutic margin, meaning that its effective dose is close to the toxic dose.
