摘要

We are pleased to publish in this dual issue of Preventive Medicine a report on an on-going project in Chicago which could well serve to inaugurate the new relationship between universities and their surrounding communities, and beyond. As we have mentioned in previous editorials (Morabia and Costanza, 2008,2009,2010), there is a growing awareness that the lack of community involvement and participation is a major limitation of community-based research. The idea is that the efficacy of community research can be boosted if it can rely on the internal expertise of the members of the community, who know their own needs best and whose firsthand insights into their community's functioning and living processes equip them well to orient and guide scientifically sound experimental evaluations of new policies and services, etc.
