摘要

This double issue of Preventive Medicine reports new findings about obesity as a risk factor, TV commercials, passive commuting, and smoking. These are four of the many horsemen of our modern apocalyptic harbinger: obesity as a disease. We use this analogy because of how these entities are connected, similar to how the biblical four horsemen of the apocalypse, conquest, war, famine, and death, are not independent of each other. Conquest is waged by war, which often results in famine for the victims, and always in death for all the belligerents. Thus it is with our modern day health-related issues: TV commercials can and passive commuting do result in more obesity, and weight gain in the non-smoking members of modern society is an obstacle to the decline of tobacco smoking in society at large.
