摘要

The pressure on Mars is less than 1% of what it is here on Earth. One of the key questions facing scientists is whether plants could thrive at lower atmospheric pressures. A prototype variable pressure growth chamber specifically for the study of long-term plant growth under low atmospheric pressures, is currently being evaluated using lightweight Grodan stone wool. If everything goes according to plan, the first manned mission to Mars will take place in 2035. The journey will take the 'martianauts'about 2.5 years. Taking along food supplies for the entire journey is impossible; that would amount to around 1,500 kilograms per person. The solution lies in growing their food. What that requires is a light and compact growth medium, which yields maximum results with the use of minimal resources - precisely the characteristics of the stone wool substrate developed by Grodan for the horticultural sector.
