A system for characterizing cattle farms in France is described. There are 36 types of dairy farm, differing in the type of specialization, location and forage system, and 6 types of suckler herd, differing in level of production per cow and the type of animal sold. The system was applied to sample data from the Farm Accounting Data Network. Results are given in tables. These underline the importance in France of beef production from dairy herds.
