The calcium-binding protein S100B is predominantly expressed by astrocytes in the human brain and is a putative marker of brain injury. A genetic variant in S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) has been associated with low cognitive performance and dementia in the elderly (Lambert et al., 2007). We tested this genetic variant (rs2300403) for association with cognitive abilities and lifetime cognitive ageing in approximately 1000 elderly Scots: the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 (LBG1936).
