The problem with termites is, they don't read textbooks, they eat them! This was certainly the case at the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine in Victoria. Nobody told the termites they're supposed to only forage in the top metre or so of soil. Though it certainly surprised the mine management when they found support timbers in the ventilation system 60 metres down the main mine shaft heavily infested with termites. The termites were later identified as Coptotermes acinaciformis.The Wonthaggi mine operated commercially from 1909 to 1968, producing more than 17 million tonnes of coal. It is now managed by Parks Victoria as a tourist destination where people can experience an underground mine, complete with rail carriages.
