摘要

Hakuta, Bialystok, and Wiley (2003) used 1990 U.S. census data to test the criticla-period hypothesis in second-language learning. Their analyses failed to support a critical period; instead, their most compelling finding was that success in second-language acquisition steadily declines throughout immigrants' life spans. In this article, I show that the procedures they used to select their analysis sample, estimate their main independent variable, and evaluate the importance of discontinuities helped generate their findings.
