A simulation result of the rank reversal phenomenon is presented with respect to the changing values of consistency ratio and number of alternatives. The simulation results reveal that the number of alternatives and the consistency ratio have significant effect on the occurrence of rank reversal. (6 refs.) The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) originally developed by Saaty (Ref. 1) has been criticized for allowing the introduction of a new alternative to bring about rank reversals among existing alternatives. According to Vargas (Ref. 2), rank reversal is a characteristic of human behavior. A theory that does not allow it or explain it is incomplete. But according to Saaty, if an absolute measurement is used, there can be no reversal in the rank order of alternatives when the new ones are added or old ones are deleted. The AHP technique admits inconsistency at a certain level that is less than or equal to 0.1.
