It is discussed in brief about how the statistical quality control (SQC) approach has evolved into statistical process control (SPC) over the years. To have effective use of SPC tools in the right way, the second edition of the SPC manual released by the Automotive Industry Aetion Group has dedicated the entire first chapter explaining the philosophy and use of SPC. In these lines of the SPC manual, the authors have presented various features of SPC, mentioning whether SPC tools are properly used by industries to achieve their goals. Some of the shortcomings in the deployment of SPC, model assumptions relevant to SPC tools, the common and assignable causes and their influences, selection of appropriate SPC tools for the right problem and certain precautions to be taken care of are included in the discussion.
