An analysis of health care quality needs to collectively recognize all the aspects differently connected and relate to the technical level of care and interaction of physicians with the patient. Though quality indicators are usually derived from clinical data sets collected in the hospital information systems, the article focuses on specific area of intensive care units (ICUs). A conceptual model is presented to measure health system quality derived from the framework by Donabedian (Ref. 1). The model is studied using a case study of a post operative ICU heart surgery in an Italian Hospital. The postoperative ICU was evaluated by taking into account the length of stay (LoS), as an indicator. The data was validated using the DMAIC approach and the results have been discussed. Some suggestions to improve and optimize LoS costs have been suggested. (21 refs.)
