Purpose: To describe the Shainin defined statistical engineering discipline and evaluates its effectiveness based on the standards proposed by Snee and Hoerl (Ref. 1). Summary: Hoerl and Snee (Ref. 1) have proposed a new formal discipline which they named as statistical engineering that is a formalization of the ongoing process of bridging the gap between statistical thinking and statistical methods. They described that statistical engineering with methods, and give statisticians an opportunity to become true leaders. The standards that should apply to successful statistical engineering projects were also developed. However, this discipline was already existing in the same name and form as proposed by R. D. Shainin (Ref. 2). Though statistical engineering started with product quality and reliability assurance, the focus has broadened to include business process and many other areas of operations. It explores the differences in the two approaches and compares statistical engineering projects to the standards proposed by Drs. Snee and Hoerl. (30 refs.)
