The goals of an organization towards implementation of quality management have been found to be several. Some are implemented for stability and control, for learning and change. It may also implement quality management practices for either rational or social reasons. This influences the type of system deployed and the subsequent performance benefits. The present research has tried to find how the rationale (rational or social) affect the type of quality management system implemented, how does it affect the subsequent effect on operational performance. The paper explains two perspectives for quality management practice implementation namely, the rational perspective and the social perspective and explains its performance implications. The hypotheses of the study were put to test on a data from the third round of the high performance manufacturing (HPM) project of 238 manufacturing plants from eight countries in three industries collected during the year of 2005-2006. The results along with implications have been discussed. (52 refs.)
