In reliability studies, the data obtained are often censored. While some censoring schemes are planned by the experimenter, others arise naturally during the study. Among the planned schemes, Type I and Type II censoring are two basic ones. In Type I censoring, the duration of the experiment is fixed, and the number of failures and failure time are random. In Type II censoring, the number of failures is fixed and the duration of the experiment is random. Random censoring arises naturally and has many applications in reliability and survival analysis studies. In industrial field testing for reliability of manufactured components, the failure time data either are not available or are unreliable. As a result, one has to base the decision on the number of failures only.
