The widely used control charts based on means require the normality assumption for the process variables and thus are very sensitive to the occasional presence of outliers. This paper presents a median chart as a better alternative for such situations, since the chart's limits are less influenced by outliers. This avoids unnecessary revision of limits. The chart is particularly recommended when prior knowledge points to the occurrence of outliers to be associated with the presence of only common causes. The construction of a median chart is discussed using relevant statistical theory on transformations, distributions and order statistics.
