To reduce the frequency and seriousness of occupational risks in a sustained way requires implementation of an occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS). Such a system can help an organization develop risk prevention activities in a structured and coordinated manner, integrated with all day-to-day activities and decisions. It can also bring real culture change, where management and employees share positive values and beliefs about occupational safety. With this in mind, many companies have begun demanding a management model, with a guide to implementation. The result is growing adoption of OHSAS 18001, the occupational health and safety management system standard (not developed by ISO), which offers the possibility of certification.
