With domestic newsprint markets unseasonably tight and offshore prices on the rise, North American newsprint makers are becoming cautiously hopeful that a price increase could be in the cards — perhaps as early as September. A $40/tonne July 1 hike attempted by a majority of US and Canadian mills including four of the five largest by capacity collapsed last month when Resolute Forest Products — which manages close to 40% of North America's newsprint production capacity — did not announce increased prices. Domestic and offshore newsprint markets have become inextricably linked, with North American mills depending on exports to offset steadily diminishing demand at home, and contacts said Resolute wanted more clarity both at home and abroad before acting on pricing.
