U.S. Coking Group's proposed metallurgical coke plant continues to move forward in the lengthy permitting process, but is it really any closer to reality? The company, which hopes to build the plant in the Toledo, OH, area, recently received an Isolated Wetlands Permit, the last major permit needed to begin construction. The project received an air quality permit to install earlier in the year after agreeing to modifications drawn up by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. A lawsuit brought by the Sierra Club is pending in an appeals court, but otherwise it appears the project has the go-ahead. Even so, the coke plant's future remains clouded. The key issue: Is the demand for coke there? It's a question that continues to haunt any new coke ventures, sources say.
