We read the article by Pinkham et al. recently published in Schizophrenia Research (Pinkham et al., 2011) with great interest. In their study, paranoid in comparison to non-paranoid schizophrenic patients were more likely to misidentify neutral expressions as angry. According to Pinkham et al., these findings contribute to the emerging hypothesis of amygdala hyperactivation as a potential neural mechanism for paranoid ideation. They support this view, in part, with evidence from a study by our group in which subjects diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia were compared with controls during a Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) task (Fernandez-Egea et al., 2010). Although Pinkham et al. rightly mention the lack of a paranoid vs. non-paranoid subgroup comparison, we would like to provide further evidence regarding our study. We did carry out an analysis of the sample, divided into subgroups; however, this was not included in the final manuscript.
