This present article provides an overview of the results obtained during Denis Morsa's master dissertation. This work has been performed in the laboratory of Mass Spectrometry at University of Liege under the direction of Valerie Gabelica and Edwin De Pauw. Mass spectrometry is an analytical tool dedicated to the separation and the identification of ions according to their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio. This measurement provides information about the elemental composition and, if a fragmentation pattern is present, about the atomic connectivity of the analyte. However, this information is usually not sufficient to characterize tridimensional structures. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is an adequate tool to assign this problem as it allows to separate ions according to their shape in the gas phase. The coupling between MS and IMS provides a multi-dimensional separation method that has found numerous applications in both separation and structural characterization of molecules, from small entities to polymers and supramolecular complexes.
