In the first part of this series we discussed the initial management of the fracture patient and factors to consider in assessing a diaphyseal fracture in order to decide whether to pursue surgical management or external coaptation. In the second partwe will discuss the numerous surgical options available for managing diaphyseal fractures and their pros and cons. Most diaphyseal fractures can be suitably stabilised with more than one technique and so issues influencing the choice of fixation systemfor an individual patient will also be considered.
