For most of the past decade, South Korea's defence and aerospace industrial base has been progressing an ambitious national UAV roadmap aimed at positioning the country as a key international hub for the sector. The roadmap, one of the few examples of national industrial planning for the UAV sector that has been able to move beyond the conceptual stage and achieve implementation, is now well into its mid-life phase and continues to be revalidated and funded by the national government. Coordinated by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), over its first five years it has guided the development of South Korea's primary indigenous UAV development efforts, including the so-called Smart UAV, and is shaping a new generation of requirements, including the development of a national UCAV programme.
