Traditionally seen as a counter-IED asset, small battlefield robots are increasingly coming into their own as ISR platforms. The recent conviction of two senior non-commissioned officers in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for forcing a nine-year-old Palestinian boy to open a suspicious package has led to widespread indignation in military circles. Serving in a dedicated reconnaissance battalion during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza during 2008, the staff sergeants' decision to use such tactics has placed renewed emphasis on the employment of small UGVs (SUGVs) for similar procedures.
