HOW LARGE MUST A COMMUNITY BE TO SUP-port an Emergency Veterinary Facility? In early 2004, the veterinarians in Abilene started asking this question and many others. The impetus for the discussions was surreptitious in nature but very effective. Everyveterinarian in Abilene received an anonymous letter in late 2003 announcing the intent of an unnamed individual to launch an emergency veterinary facility in Abilene in the immediate future and invited us to an informational meeting. Of course, every one of us showed up. The perpetrator was an office manager of one of our colleagues. When we realized what she had done the plan began to make sense. For at least 10 years, Dr. Rob Dominy had been encouraging this group to consider the emergency clinic issue, but with little response. This time, he got our attention.
