In sum, brief family psychoeduction has been used to improve treatment engagement 74 and is considered a standard of care. 1 Evidence is emerging that more intensive family interventions may be efficacious in the prevention 92,93 and treatment of youth depression 24,90 and suicidality. 19 In this article we have reviewed the literature on family treatments for youth depression and described and illustrated two family-based treatment models that specifically incorporate developmental factors. We expect that the next few years will demonstrate more conclusively that increased inclusion of families in the treatment of depression and suicide may broaden social support, help skill generalization, and enhance treatment efficacy.
