Double cropping of winter cereals back into cotton ground is practiced by many dryland growers --and by a few irrigators -- as part of a rotational program, provided they have plentiful water on hand. To conserve what little soil moisture is present,and to preserve the generally excellent soil tilth present, minimal disturbance planting into slashed or unslashed cotton stubble is the general practice adopted. Concerns have been expressed about the effectiveness of such practices in controlling overwintering pupae, where they are present. Control of these pupae is at the very heart of a resistance management program -- increasing levels of resistance in the Heliothis armigera population to most groups of insecticides have been measured this season.
